Kaja Kallas Highlights Urgent Global Priorities

Former Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas, who has been appointed as the next High Representative of the European Union (EU) for Foreign Affairs and Security, stated that she urgently acknowledges the need to address the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East in the next five years. During a hearing with MEPs, Kallas warned about the threats posed by countries such as Russia, China, North Korea, and Iran.

She emphasized that China and Russia are creating interdependencies and exploiting the openness of European societies against them. She identified two immediate priorities for her mandate: Russia's war against Ukraine and the conflict in the Middle East. Kallas expressed that Ukraine's victory is a priority for all and that the war on the European continent is a crucial issue.

The Estonian politician underscored the importance of continuing to work daily to address these situations and provide military, financial, and humanitarian assistance as needed. She proposed a clear path for Ukraine's future accession to the EU and highlighted the urgency of a ceasefire in the Middle East, the release of all hostages, and the need to maintain focus on humanitarian aid.

Kallas also advocated for establishing comprehensive and mutually beneficial partnerships with Mediterranean countries to protect the EU's external borders and address the root causes of migration. She expressed the importance of investing more in defense and warned about the structural imbalances between the EU and China, as well as China's support for Russia in the conflict with Ukraine.

Additionally, Kallas expressed her willingness to work with the elected President of the United States, Donald Trump, and emphasized the need to maintain unity among allies. She advocated for strengthening ties with Latin America and the Caribbean due to shared values and interests.
